Why buffer warehousing matters in the supply chain

PE and PP granulate purchased by industrial companies typically arrives from Asia or the Middle East in sea containers, with a 4–8 week lead time. Factories cannot afford production stoppages due to raw material shortages.

A buffer warehouse solves this problem: a batch arrives at Chorula, enters storage, and is dispatched to production as needed — without the risk of a shutdown even if the next shipment is delayed.

The SMIALA terminal acts as a cross-docking or buffer warehouse for companies across Poland and Central Europe.

Storage conditions

• Temperature: unheated but insulated — typically 5–25°C year-round
• Humidity: below 60% relative humidity
• Lighting: no direct UV exposure (prevents photodegradation of PE/PP)
• Floor: industrial concrete, rated at minimum 5 t/m²
• Security: 24h CCTV and alarm system

Stock management

Inbound

Vehicle arrives → gross weighing → document check → forklift unloads to designated zone → batch number and location assigned → inbound protocol.

Outbound

Release order received (phone, email) → batch prepared per FIFO → net weighing → loaded onto client vehicle → outbound protocol with weights and big-bag numbers.

Integration with transloading and repackaging

The SMIALA warehouse is integral to the transloading terminal. A typical material flow:

Container → Warehouse → Transloading to silo trailer

A company can receive a container, hold the contents in storage and load a silo trailer at a time of their choosing — without needing to synchronise the container and trailer arrival to the minute.
