What is bulk material repackaging?

Bulk material repackaging is the conversion of trade packaging format without changing the material itself. Typical operations at the SMIALA terminal:

  • Big-bag (1000 kg) → 25 kg bags — for customers who need small portions or manual dosing
  • 25 kg bags → big-bag — consolidation of multiple small batches into one bulk transport unit
  • Big-bag → octabin (200–400 kg) — intermediate format for automated filling machines

Why do factories need repackaging?

Most PE and PP plastic granulates arrive in Europe in big-bags loaded into sea containers — the most cost-effective transport format. But end-user factories often cannot use big-bags directly:

  • Automated filling machines — many injection moulding and extrusion machines have hoppers designed for 25 kg bags
  • Recipe weighing — composite production requires precise weighing; 25 kg bags make this practical
  • Racking weight limits — standard racking holds 500–800 kg per pallet; 25 kg bags on a pallet are the safe, standardised solution
  • Customer requirements — end buyers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland may require 25 kg bags with specific labelling

Screening and sorting

On request SMIALA screens material before repackaging using appropriate mesh sizes to separate fines or off-spec granules. Results are documented and reported with the batch protocol.

Weighing and labelling

Every package after repackaging is weighed and labelled. Labels include: material name, batch number, net/gross weight, date, and customer barcodes on request.
